Before, I would call myself a music lover. I’m so universal I can get into every single genre of music out there, never mind it’s 70s, 80s, rock, boy-band, R&B, jazz, trance and the list goes on an on.
As a music lover as I called myself, I would also call myself a movies lover. As the endless music list, so with the genres of movies; action, sci-fi, documentary, thriller, and drama, except musical. Yes, I’m not into musical movies.
The Soloist is not a musical movie. It’s an adaptation from a book inspired by a true story, and the story is about music. It’s like an autobiography movie, to be exact.
The story centers on Steve Lopez (a Los Angeles Times writer) and Nathaniel Anthony Ayers Junior (a homeless guy who plays a two-string violin). This guy Lopez is searching for an idea or topic for his article, and somehow ended up in a park hearing someone playing a violin. It’s no ordinary someone, that someone is a homeless guy. And it’s no ordinary violin, that violin is a two-string violin.
The story is building up from here. From how Lopez studies Ayers and Ayers’ passion on music, to the relationship being built between these two very different guys. The story does somehow in times felt a little bit messy, but this isn’t a reason for not saying that the story, the plot, and the characters are heart-warming.
Lopez played by Downey Jr, and he portrays the character so adorably charming. There is one scene when he laughed after hearing a homeless old woman telling a story, and I know that he actually laughed for real. I loved that scene.
Ayers played by Foxx, which as usual portrayed the character with full of heart. He looked, and sounds definitely like a homeless guy. The scene where the cameras followed a dove flying around the city when the character Ayers playing his new cello (given by one of Lopez’ reader), was a definite refreshing.
As a music lover, I’m ashamed of not opened up myself hearing the Beethoven before. This movie introduced me the harmony of the Beethoven music, and I’m truly grateful for that.
There is so much in the movie for me to admire. To write it down here, for me, is an understatement. But still, I have to conclude; as beautiful and magical music is, so is this movie to me. Two thumbs up.
